Pelosi makes Brady new ‘mayor’ of Capitol Hill

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) named Rep. Robert Brady (D-Pa.) as chairman of the House Administration Committee Thursday.

“Congressman Brady’s experience as a leading member of the House Administration Committee and his in-depth knowledge of the internal functions of the House will make him a powerful voice as Chairman,” Pelosi said.

{mosads}Brady, the second-ranking Democrat on the committee, has served as acting chairman since the late Rep. Juanita Millender-McDonald (D-Calif.), who was suffering from cancer, took a leave of absence last month.

Millender-McDonald, the first black woman to lead the committee, passed away April 22.
Brady thanked Pelosi and promised to ensure the best for the Capitol Complex.

“I appreciate Speaker Pelosi’s support and will continue the legacy of Congresswoman Millender-McDonald to correct oversights from the past," Brady said. "One of my priorities will be to make every effort to keep the Capitol Complex as secure as possible while remaining accessible for the millions of visitors every year.”

The House Administration Committee oversees many of the everyday actions on the Hill. Its chairman is often called the "mayor" of Capitol Hill.

Ranking member Vernon Ehlers (R-Mich.) welcomed Brady's appointment as head of the committee.

"I am most pleased with the Speaker’s decision to appoint Representative Brady as Chairman of the Committee on House Administration," Ehlers said. "I have had the pleasure of working beside him on this Committee, both as Chair and Ranking Member, and I admire him."
