Rep. Sherwood apologizes in ad

In advance of his first debate against a political newcomer threatening his congressional seat, Rep. Don Sherwood (R-Pa.) debuted a television spot this week aiming directly at the controversy that has made the four-term lawmaker vulnerable.

In the ad, Sherwood faces the camera and apologizes to his constituents for his role in an extramarital affair with a woman who later sued him, claiming he choked her. They settled the case and Sherwood denies assaulting the woman.

“I made a mistake that nearly cost me the love of my wife Carol and our daughters,” Sherwood says, opening the 30-second spot.

He was scheduled to debate Navy Reserve officer and college professor Chris Carney (D) last night.

In the ad, Sherwood states, “While I’m truly sorry for disappointing you, I never wavered from my commitment to reduce taxes, create jobs and bring home our fair share. Should you forgive me, you can count on me to keep fighting hard for you and your family.”

Sherwood is running behind Carney, according to a recent poll. A survey released by Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pa., on Monday shows Carney ahead with 47 percent to Sherwood’s 38 percent; 15 percent were undecided.
