Stevens to seek re-election in 2008

Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) indicated this week that he will run for reelection in 2008.

During a question-and-answer session with The Hill’s Congress Blog, Stevens stated, "I have every intention to do so." The Senate president pro tem will be 84 when his seat is up for reelection. If he runs, Stevens is expected to easily win his eighth term, having held the seat since 1968.

Stevens, chairman of the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee and chairman of the Appropriations defense subcommittee, cited his ongoing commitment to development and pipeline projects in his state that he has "worked incessantly" to secure.

"I intend to stay as long as God and the people of Alaska allow me to secure these projects for Alaska," said the senator.
