Judge rules against Jefferson motion
A federal judge yesterday denied a motion by Rep. William Jefferson (D-La.) to keep materials seized in a May 20 raid of his Rayburn office sealed until he exhausts all legal appeals.
"Issuing a stay would harm the public’s interest in a prompt and final outcome of the Government’s investigation of serious crimes involving a sitting United States Congressman running for reelection in November," wrote U.S. District Court Judge Thomas Hogan.
Hogan ruled last week that the search was legal. Jefferson has vowed to appeal.
The Justice Department raided the office as part of a bribery investigation targeting the Louisianan.
