House Democrats to visit New Orleans

The House Democratic Caucus is planning to visit New Orleans on the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

The trip will be led by Reps. Charlie Melancon, (D-La.), William Jefferson (D-La.) and Gene Taylor (D-Miss.), whose districts fell in the path of the storm, and members of the caucus’s Katrina task force.

The Congressional Black Caucus has been mulling a similar anniversary pilgrimage.

The caucus also passed a resolution yesterday to make the weekend of Aug. 26-27 a “time for national prayer and remembrance” for the storm’s victims.

Democratic Caucus Chairman James Clyburn (D-S.C.) said his colleagues would “work with the citizens of the region and push for a new direction that rejuvenates and restores the lives, homes and livelihoods.”
