Former Sen. Stevens to be buried Wednesday

Services for the late Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) will be held in Anchorage on Wednesday.

{mosads}Senate Sergeant at Arms Terrance Gainer announced the news Thursday morning. The service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Alaska time — 6 p.m. Eastern time — at the Anchorage Baptist Temple. All current senators have been invited.

The public will be invited to pay their respects to Stevens on Tuesday at All Saints Episcopal Church in Anchorage. The late senator will lie in repose from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Alaska time, according to a release sent Thursday evening by representatives of Stevens’ family.

Gainer said condolence notes can be sent to Stevens’s wife, Catherine, in Anchorage. Instead of flowers, Gainer said donations should be made to the North to the Future Foundation in Anchorage. The foundation, which was renamed from the Ted Stevens Foundation, is a non-profit group formed in 2000 to memorialize Stevens’s congressional career.

Stevens was killed in a plane crash late Monday night in a remote area of southwestern Alaska, along with four other passengers. Four passengers survived the crash.

Stevens had already survived prostate cancer as well as a 1978 plane crash in Anchorage that killed his first wife, Ann. He served in the Senate from 1968 to 2009, become the longest-serving Republican in 2008. He narrowly lost a reelection race that year amid corruption charges that were later dismissed due to prosecutorial misconduct.

On the Senate floor Thursday morning, during a rare recess session to pass a border-security bill, Democratic Sen. Charles Schumer (N.Y.) passed by unanimous consent a resolution honoring Stevens.
