Senate could adjourn as soon as Wednesday

The Senate may adjourn for the midterm election as soon as tomorrow, giving jittery Democrats a few extra days to campaign at home.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) announced the Senate would vote at 11:30 Tuesday morning to begin debate on legislation that would end tax incentives for companies that operate production facilities overseas.

{mosads}Republicans are expected to block the bill, which Democrats say will help create jobs in the U.S.

Democratic sponsors have yet to announce the support of any Republicans and some Democrats, such as Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.), have expressed concerns about the legislation.

After consideration of the offshoring legislation, the Senate will vote on a motion to take up a stop-gap spending measure to keep the government funded beyond Sept. 30, the end of the fiscal year.

That bill is expected to have bipartisan support.

A Democratic leadership aide said the Senate could adjourn by the end of the day Wednesday if Republicans agree to waive procedural objections.

“It’s possible we wrap up as soon as tomorrow if the Republicans yield back time,” said the Democratic aide.

Reid would also like to confirm a bloc of President Obama’s executive-branch and judicial nominees before leaving for the campaign trail.

There are more than 80 nominees pending on the Senate’s executive calendar.

A Wednesday adjournment would be derailed if Democrats muster the 60 votes needed to begin debate on the anti-offshoring bill.

Republicans could also raise objections to the stop-gap funding measure, delaying final passage.
