Reid predicts both Dem, GOP plans will fall in Tuesday test
Senate Majority Leader Reid (D-Nev.) says Democratic and Republican plans to fund the federal government for the rest of the fiscal year both will fail in test votes Tuesday.
The Senate will vote on a House-passed Republican plan to cut an additional $57 billion from the federal budget and a Democratic alternative that would shave about $6.5 billion.
{mosads}The Democratic proposal would reduce spending by $51 billion compared to the budget President Obama proposed for 2011. The House legislation would cut $100 billion.
Both bills would keep the government in operation through the end of September.
Reid predicted both proposals would fail, raising the threat the government could shut down unless both sides reconvene at the negotiating table.
“We’ve all done the math and we all know how these votes will turn out: Neither proposal will pass, which means neither will reach the president’s desk as written,” Reid said.
“And if we want to realistically get something done before it’s too late, the House and Senate — Democrats and Republicans — should return to the negotiating table, where we know a good compromise on common ground awaits us,” Reid warned. “The country is waiting, too, and time is not on our side.”
