Senate to vote on Ryan budget after Dem victory in NY-26

The Senate will vote on the House-passed budget plan sponsored by Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) Wednesday afternoon, putting Republicans in a tough spot over Medicare.

The Senate will vote on four budget plans after 5 p.m., including Ryan’s blueprint and budget plans introduced by Sens. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) and Rand Paul (R-Ky.), according to a senior Democratic leadership aide.

The vote comes to the floor a day after Republicans lost a congressional seat in a Republican-leaning district. Democrats in the campaign for New York’s 26th District argued the House GOP budget would hurt Medicare.

{mosads}At the insistence of Republican leaders, the Senate will also vote on the budget plan that President Obama sent to Capitol Hill earlier this year.

Democrats are expected to vote against the Obama plan because they argue it has been supplanted by the deficit reduction plan Obama laid out in a speech at George Washington University in April.

Four Republicans have already announced they will vote against Ryan’s budget: Paul and centrist Sens. Olympia Snowe (R-Maine), Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Scott Brown (R-Mass.).

GOP leaders say they will vote for the Ryan budget, but they are not pressing colleagues to do the same.
