Schumer slams Trump for attacking federal judge

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Saturday slammed President Trump for his tweet against the “so-called judge” who imposed a halt on his travel ban.

“The President’s attack on Judge James Robart, a Bush appointee who passed with 99 votes, shows a disdain for an independent judiciary that doesn’t always bend to his wishes and a continued lack of respect for the Constitution, making it more important that the Supreme Court serve as an independent check on the administration,” Schumer said in a statement.

Robart on Friday ordered a nation-wide halt on the executive order that Trump signed last week, which imposed a 90-day ban on nationals from seven predominantly Muslim countries entering the United States. The original order also called for a 120-day ban on admitting refugees and an indefinite halt on admitting refugees from Syria.

{mosads}Trump responded by calling the judge’s opinion “ridiculous,” saying it will be over-turned.

“The opinion of this so-called judge, which essentially takes law-enforcement away from our country, is ridiculous and will be overturned!” Trump wrote on Twitter Saturday.

Schumer added that Trump continues to set “the bar even higher” for the confirmation of Judge Neil Gorsuch, the president’s nominee to fill the Supreme Court seat vacated by the late Associate Justice Antonin Scalia.

“With each action testing the Constitution, and each personal attack on a judge, President Trump raises the bar even higher for Judge Gorsuch’s nomination to serve on the Supreme Court,” Schumer said.

“His ability to be an independent check will be front and center throughout the confirmation process.”
