Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) on Tuesday called for more transparency from FBI Director James Comey following his testimony that the bureau is investigating possible ties between Donald Trump’s presidential campaign and Russia.
“I think that more could be told without violating national security or going into the details of an investigation,” Grassley told CNN’s “New Day.”
“And there’s so many accusations out there that the more that can be said the better. And it will bring some confidence and so basically calling for more transparency.”
{mosads}Comey during his Monday testimony in front of the House Intelligence Committee confirmed the bureau is investigating Russia’s interference in the presidential election, including any possible coordination between Trump campaign officials and Moscow.
Comey, however, declined to comment on whether Trump himself is under investigation.
Grassley in the interview with CNN on Monday also called for updates on leaks from the intelligence community.
“It seems to me that we ought to be talking more about what’s being done on the people who committed the crime of letting out to the public this national security information that was supposed to not be put out. Because that’s a violation of law.”
Grassley noted that he did not watch Comey’s testimony on Monday. The Iowa senator is the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which began Judge Neil Gorsuch’s confirmation hearing for the open U.S. Supreme Court seat on Monday.
