Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) says Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch still hasn’t made clear his views on key legal issues.
“So at the end of the day we have no idea where Judge Gorsuch is on Roe versus Wade, on women’s healthcare and critical issues,” Durbin said Wednesday on CNN’s “New Day,” one day after Gorsuch testified for hours to the Senate Judiciary Committee.
{mosads}“Let’s be honest — throughout the campaign, Donald Trump said over and over again, ‘I’m going to appoint a judge who reverses Roe v. Wade,’ ” Durbin said. “But at the end of the day, we each have to make a decision as to whether this man should have lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court. It is not an easy call because it’s the deciding vote in a 4-4 court.”
Gorsuch, currently a justice on the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, said during Tuesday’s hearings Trump had never asked him to overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court case that legalized abortion nationwide.
He will face another day of questioning before the Senate Judiciary Committee Wednesday.
Senate Democrats have threatened to filibuster Gorsuch’s nomination. If they did, the GOP would either need to pick off eight Democrats to pass the 60-vote threshold or invoke the so-called nuclear option, changing the rules to allow a Supreme Court nominee to be confirmed by a simple majority in the Senate.
