Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) says he thinks Americans would “appreciate” if President Trump was able to apologize for his mistakes.
During a Wednesday interview on “CBS This Morning,” Graham discussed Trump’s claim that former President Obama wiretapped Trump Tower before the election.
“When you have the highest official in the land — the president of the United States — accusing his predecessor of illegal activity with no evidence, that hurts our democracy,” Graham said.
Asked what would happen if the president refuses to back down, Graham said he thinks Trump will “suffer over time with the American people.”
{mosads}”Here’s what I would say to the president: It doesn’t mean you’re above having to say you’re sorry or to apologize if you did something wrong,” he said.
“I think most people in America would appreciate it if the president of the United States had the ability to say, ‘I made a mistake. I’m sorry.'”
Graham said the president will raise concerns about his credibility if he continues to spread the unsubstantiated claim.
“There will come a day that you’ll have to look the TV camera in the eye and tell them that North Korea is about to develop a missile, hit our homeland and I want to stop them,” Graham said.
“You need that credibility. So I think President Trump is going to put his credibility at risk if he continues this narrative without proof.”
FBI Director James Comey earlier this week said the Department of Justice has “no information” to support the president’s wiretapping claim. He refused to “characterize” the tweets containing the allegations from Trump, saying only that “I have no information” that supports the claim.
