GOP senator: Biden would have beat Trump
Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) says former Vice President Joe Biden could have easily defeated President Trump if he’d run for president last year.
“If Joe Biden would have run against Donald Trump, Biden would have won in a landslide,” Sasse told The New York Times on Wednesday.
Asked why Trump won, Sasse said: “I would argue pretty vociferously that’s it’s also because of who his opponent was,” referring to Hillary Clinton.
{mosads}Biden last month voiced regret over not seeking the presidency, predicting he would have beaten Trump if he had earned the Democratic nomination.
“I had planned on running for president and although it would have been a very difficult primary, I think I could have won,” he said during a speech at Colgate University in Hamilton, N.Y. “I don’t know, maybe not. But I thought I could have won.”
“I had a lot of data and I was fairly confident that if I were the Democratic Party’s nominee, I had a better chance than ever of being president. But do I regret not being president? Yes. I was the best qualified.”
Biden noted he lost “part of my soul” following the death of his son Beau in May 2015 to brain cancer.
He said he could not devote his full attention to a presidential campaign while also supporting his family.
