Collins: Trump should give clear answer on Comey tapes
Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) said Sunday that President Trump should give a clear answer on whether or not there are recordings of his conversations with former FBI Director James Comey.
“This is an issue that the president should have cleared up in his press conference. He should give a straight yes or no to the question of whether or not the tapes exist,” Collins told CNN’s “State of the Union.”
Trump suggested there could be “tapes” of his conversations with Comey in a tweet after he fired the FBI director.
{mosads}“James Comey better hope that there are no ‘tapes’ of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!” Trump said on May 12.
Collins said on Sunday that if the tapes exist, Trump should hand them over both to the Senate Intelligence Committee and to the special counsel conducting the probe into Russia’s interference in the presidential election.
“I would be fine with issuing a subpoena, but that most likely would come from the special counsel’s office,” she said.
A subpoena for the potential tapes should not be necessary, the Republican senator added.
