McConnell voices confidence in Mueller

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) voiced confidence Tuesday in Robert Mueller, the special counsel handling an investigation of alleged collusion between members of President Trump’s campaign and Russia.

“I have a lot of confidence in Bob Mueller. I think it was a good choice,” McConnell told reporters, one day after reports emerged that Trump might be considering firing Mueller.

Some Republicans have suggested that Mueller may have a conflict of interest because of his close relationship with former FBI Director James Comey, whom Trump fired last month.

{mosads}Mueller has also come under fire from the right for hiring investigation staff who had previously made contributions to Democrats.

“Republicans are delusional if they think the special counsel is going to be fair,” former Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.), a Trump adviser, tweeted.

Referring to Federal Election Commission reports, Gingrich also wrote: “Look who he is hiring. check fec reports. Time to rethink.”

But McConnell sought to slam the door on that discussion by voicing full support Tuesday for Mueller, echoing similar comments from Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.).

“I think he should let Bob Mueller do his job, do his job independently, and do his job quickly, because I think that that’s what he would want to have happen,” Ryan told The Hugh Hewitt Show earlier Tuesday.
