McCaskill attended reception at Russian ambassador’s residence in 2015
Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) attended a 2015 reception at the residence of Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak, CNN reported on Monday.
The news network said McCaskill was photographed at the reception in November 2015. In an interview, the senator confirmed that she attended the event to honor a former Democratic lawmaker from her home state.
“I should’ve been careful about the 140 characters and given it context,” McCaskill told CNN. “But it’s not the first or the last time my tweets will get me in trouble.”
She was referring to a March tweet she posted that said: “I’ve been on the Armed Services (Committee) for 10 years. No call or meeting w/ Russian ambassador. Ever.”
{mosads}McCaskill told CNN that while she was in his presence, she never met with Kislyak as part of her work for the committee.
“So on those two occasions, I was in the presence of the Russian ambassador, was in the same place I was, but never did he come to my office, never did he request a meeting with me, never did I have a meeting with him as a member of the Armed Services Committee,” she told the news network.
“A hundred forty characters were my enemy there because [Attorney General] Jeff Sessions was giving the impression that these were part of his — part and parcel of his duty on the Armed Services Committee,” she continued.
Sessions has been under scrutiny amid revelations that he failed to disclose to the Senate two meetings he had with Kislyak in 2016 while serving as a surrogate for President Trump on the campaign trail.
