Schumer: Trump needs to ‘roll up his sleeves’ on Puerto Rico instead of calling names

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Sunday urged President Trump to get to work to help Puerto Rico instead of calling names.

“The president, instead of tweeting against the mayor of San Juan, who’s watching her people die and just made a plea for help, [should] roll up his sleeves and get to work here,” Schumer said on CBS’s “Face The Nation.”

“The bottom line is, at least for the first week and a half, the effort has been slow-footed, disorganized and not adequate.”

{mosads}Schumer said other people have agreed that more needs to be done in Puerto Rico to deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Maria.

“This has not been a good response,” he said.

“It needs the president to stop calling names … roll up his sleeves and get to work.”

Schumer also said Trump, who is planning to visit Puerto Rico on Tuesday, should have gone to the island earlier.

“The president going makes a huge difference,” he said, “and logistics didn’t get in the way in the past.”

Trump in recent days has pushed back against critics who say his administration has not done enough to aid Puerto Rico.

On Saturday, he lashed out at the mayor of San Juan after she criticized the federal response in an emotional plea for help.
