Dem senator slams Trump for dedicating golf trophy to hurricane victims
Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) blasted President Trump for dedicating a golf trophy to hurricane victims, saying the move struck him “as very ‘let them eat cake.’ ”
“Maybe I’m blinded by my anger but the dedication of a golf trophy to people suffering strikes me as very ‘let them eat cake,’ ” Schatz tweeted Sunday.

Trump dedicated the trophy at the Presidents Cup golf tournament to victims of the hurricanes that have struck the U.S. in recent months.
“On behalf of all of the people of Texas, and all of the people — if you look today and see what is happening, how horrible it is but we have it under really great control — Puerto Rico and the people of Florida who have really suffered over this last short period of time with the hurricanes, I want to just remember them,” Trump said.
“And we’re going to dedicate this trophy to all of those people that went through so much that we love — a part of our great state, really part of our great nation.”
The quote “let them eat cake” is commonly attributed to royal and French Revolution figure Marie Antoinette, who is said to have uttered the phrase after hearing of bread shortages.
However, there is no record of Antoinette actually saying the phrase.
This is the second time a lawmaker has compared Trump to Antoinette this weekend.
Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) tweeted Saturday that “Trump plays Marie Antoinette: Sits at his golf club while Puerto Rico suffers… then attacks San Juan Mayor for ‘poor leadership.’ “
