Senate investigators interviewed Russians from Trump Tower meeting with Trump Jr: report
Investigators for the Senate Intelligence Committee have interviewed Russians who were present for the June 2016 meeting with Donald Trump Jr. at Trump Tower, according to CNN.
The committee’s chairman, Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.), told the network that investigators spoke with some of the Russians present for the meeting, however, he did not specify which Russians were interviewed, or how many had been interviewed.
Burr said the committee was looking to speak with everyone else “involved in the meeting before we know exactly what we want from Don Jr.”
The news demonstrates that lawmakers remain focused on alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian election meddling, even as special counsel Robert Mueller’s own federal investigation gains momentum.
{mosads}The development comes after the president’s oldest son met with a Senate Judiciary Committee panel behind closed doors last month.
The Intelligence Committee has already met with Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, who were both present for the Trump Tower meeting.
Trump Jr. originally agreed to the meeting at Trump Tower last year, in which he was promised damaging information that “would incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russia and would be very useful to your father,” according to emails he released related to the meeting.
“This is obviously very high level and sensitive information but is part of Russia and its government’s support for Mr. Trump,” an intermediary wrote to Trump Jr.
“If it what’s you say I love it especially later in the summer,” Trump Jr. responded.
The lawyer mentioned, Natalia Veselnitskaya, was at the time lobbying for the removal of U.S. sanctions on Russia.
