Corker: Trump meeting with GOP on tax reform is just a ‘photo op’

Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) reportedly said Monday that President Trump joining Republican senators at their weekly policy lunch on Tuesday to talk tax reform is just a “photo op” for the president.

The retiring Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman, one of Trump’s harshest GOP critics, is said to have made the comment to NBC News.

Trump’s appearance at the lunch will be his first time addressing senators at the Capitol since taking office. He’s expected to push Republicans on passing his tax-reform plan.

{mosads}Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) announced the meeting last week in a statement, saying Trump would join the conference to “press our common agenda and speed a great American recovery.”

Corker’s comments come after a war of words with Trump in recent weeks.

Trump took to Twitter earlier this month to attack Corker, accusing him of not having “the guts to run” for reelection and claiming Corker “begged” him for his endorsement.

Corker soon fired back, calling Trump’s White House “an adult day care center.”

The Tennessee Republican, who announced last month he wouldn’t seek reelection in 2018, later told The New York Times that Trump could put the U.S. “on the path to World War III.”

“He concerns me,” Corker said. “He would have to concern anyone who cares about our nation.”

Corker also accused Trump of “publicly castrating” Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.
