Baldwin: ‘I believe the women’ accusing Moore

Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) on Monday said she believes the women who spoke to The Washington Post about their encounters as teens with Alabama Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore.

“Well, I believe the women who were reluctantly involved in the story that The Washington Post released recently. It seems to be a very carefully researched story,” Baldwin told CNN’s “New Day.”

“And I sometimes wonder, how much does it take for people to believe women in these instances?”

{mosads}Baldwin urged Alabama voters to “make the right choice” in December, touting the Democratic nominee, Doug Jones, as “a better choice.” 

Moore has denied the allegation that in 1979 he had sexual contact with a 14-year-old when he would have been 32. The report also included accounts from three women who said Moore attempted to court them during the same time period, when they were between 16 and 18 years old.

The former judge in an interview last week did not deny that he may have dated teenaged women at that point in his life, though he said he didn’t “remember anything like that.”

Baldwin during her television appearance on Monday dismissed the defenses of Moore that have emerged in the wake of the allegations.

“First of all, the reporting was very carful in terms of interviewing corroborating witnesses,” Baldwin said. “Four individuals who weren’t in contact with one another and they were reluctant at first.”

Moore’s campaign has argued the allegations are politically motivated, questioning the timing of The Washington Post’s story, which comes several weeks before the Dec. 12 special election.
