RNC chair: Jones now answers to people who support Trump

Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel on Tuesday reacted to Democrat Doug Jones’s victory in the Alabama Senate special election by declaring that Jones now answers to voters who support President Trump.

“Doug Jones now answers to Alabamians, who overwhelmingly support President Trump’s conservative agenda, not Schumer & Democrat party bosses who prioritize obstruction over tax cuts & economic revival for Americans,” McDaniel tweeted.

Jones defeated Republican Roy Moore Tuesday night. He led by more than 20,000 votes, or 1.5 percentage points, with all precincts reporting. Moore, however, has refused to concede.

Trump won Alabama in the 2016 presidential election with roughly 63 percent of the vote.

{mosads}Moore was plagued by accusations of sexual misconduct in the final month of the campaign. Multiple women said that the candidate made advances on them when they were teenagers and he was in his 30s.

The RNC initially cut ties with Moore after the allegations as numerous Republican lawmakers called on the candidate to withdraw from the race.

But Trump fully endorsed Moore one week before the election, saying he didn’t want a Democrat to win the seat.

Following Trump’s endorsement, the RNC reinstated its support for Moore and directed financial resources to his campaign.
