Santorum: Trump’s ‘personal antics’ overshadow accomplishments

Former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) says President Trump’s “antics” have overshadowed the administration’s accomplishments.

“I think he could do very, very well. But his personal antics have just overwhelmed the accomplishments of this administration and the efforts that he’s trying to put forward,” Santorum said on CNN’s “The Axe Files.”

Santorum cited Trump’s frequent attacks on those who disagree with him.

“If the president continues to try to bring out his personal peeves with whoever happens to insult him the day before, you’re going to have an exhaustion factor,” he said.

Santorum predicted the president’s behavior would have electoral consequences.

“When I see a president who I don’t see as a role model for the lessons of life that I want to impart on my children and the people that I care for in this world, that’s bothersome to me,” Santorum said

“It’s harmful to have a generation of Americans see that this is the way, you know, people of responsibility and power and influence behave.”

Trump frequently attacks his political rivals on social media.

Earlier this week, the president went after Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), saying she would “do anything” for campaign contributions.

“Lightweight Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, a total flunky for Chuck Schumer and someone who would come to my office ‘begging’ for campaign contributions not so long ago (and would do anything for them), is now in the ring fighting against Trump. Very disloyal to Bill & Crooked-USED!” Trump tweeted earlier this week.

Santorum also addressed the recent Democratic victory in the special Senate election in Alabama. 

He said the result of the election “means a lot of folks stayed home on the Republican side.”

“I think part of it was because of Moore’s personal issues,” he said.

“But it just goes to show you that character issues matter to a lot of people and they mattered about Roy Moore and they will matter about Donald Trump.”

Santorum has been critical of some of Trump’s actions and his behavior on social media before. In a May interview, he said he wished the president would stop tweeting.
