Meghan McCain says her father regrets opposition to MLK Day

Meghan McCain on Monday defended her father, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), after a Twitter user criticized him for his previous position on making Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday a federal holiday.

“Hey Meghan, remember when your dad voted against making  a holiday?” the Twitter user wrote.

“We all live with regrets and my father points to this and his stance on the confederate flag in 2000 as 2 of them,” McCain, a cohost of “The View,” tweeted in response, adding that she is “still intensely proud of him.”

John McCain was among those who criticized President Trump last week after he reportedly referred to some nations as “shithole countries,” sparking widespread backlash.

{mosads}“Respect for the God-given dignity of every human being, no matter their race, ethnicity or other circumstances of their birth, is the essence of American patriotism,” the Arizona senator, who has been diagnosed with brain cancer, said in a statement
