Graham: Both parties would ‘suffer’ if Congress doesn’t take up gun legislation

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham (S.C.) on Sunday said both parties will “suffer” if Congress doesn’t take up gun legislation.

“If we don’t take this up and Democrats don’t work with us, we’ll all suffer and we should,” Graham told CBS’s “Face the Nation.” 

{mosads}The South Carolina senator argued Republicans must work across party lines on the gun issue.

“If we don’t, we’re going to get hurt because most Americans believe we should solve problems that Americans are facing like gun violence,” Graham said of taking up a gun bill during an election year.

The senator’s remarks come after President Trump last week hosted a bipartisan group of lawmakers for a televised meeting about guns.

Activists and members of Congress have called for stricter gun legislation after the school shooting in South Florida that left 17 people dead.

Graham on Sunday urged Trump to put forward a proposal to Congress.

“Propose something, Mr. President. And I think Republicans have an obligation to work with Democrats to make it law if we can,” he said.
