GOP senator wants to see more from North Korea before a meeting

Republican Sen. Cory Gardner (Colo.) said Sunday that he wants to see more from North Korea before talks over its nuclear program. 

“I’d like to see come concrete steps. More than just a cessation of testing,” Gardner told CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

{mosads}Gardner said the United States needs additional information about how North Korea will denuclearize before any meeting between President Trump and Kim Jong Un.

“What we need to see is North Korea actually living up to some of the agreements,” he said.

Trump said last week that he would meet face-to-face with Kim. It would be the first meeting between a sitting U.S. president and a North Korean leader.

Trump last year vowed to destroy North Korea should it provoke the United States and has repeatedly invoked the “Rocket Man” moniker to refer to Kim.

Gardner last year called on Trump to “ratchet up pressure” on North Korea ahead of the president’s inauguration. He also criticized the Obama administration for its approach to North Korea’s aggression.

“That is why I urge the Trump administration to immediately pursue and implement a full range of economic and criminal unilateral sanctions on any entity that violates North Korea sanctions,” Gardner wrote in an op-ed for CNN.
