Conservatives rip Cosby-Kavanaugh comparison on CNN

Conservatives are ripping CNN over a segment in which a guest compared convicted felon Bill Cosby to embattled Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, saying people cannot defend Kavanaugh while opposing Cosby.

Cosby was sentenced Tuesday to three to 10 years in state prison by Pennsylvania Judge Steven O’Neill on sexual assault charges.

{mosads}”I’m looking at people actually saying and applauding the judge [O’Neill] and his sentence and then in the same breath wanting to defend Kavanaugh,” criminal defense attorney Yodit Tewolde said on CNN’s “Newsroom with Brooke Baldwin” on Tuesday.

“It’s disturbing to me because … this is a monumental, defining moment this week when you have someone like Cosby going to prison and then in the same breath having Kavanaugh possibly going to the highest court in the land,” Tewolde continued.

“Anyone that’s defending Kavanagh could not in the same breath now applaud this verdict that this judge has handed down … it just doesn’t make sense,” she added.

The show’s host Brooke Baldwin did not respond directly to Yewolde’s assertions in the segment.

Cosby was found guilty of drugging and sexually assaulting a woman, Andrea Constand, over a decade ago. More than 60 additional women have publicly accused him of rape and sexual misconduct, often involving drugs.

Kavanaugh is facing sexual misconduct allegations from two women, both of whom emerged in the past two weeks. Christine Blasey Ford is accusing Kavanaugh of pinning her down and groping her over her clothes during a high school party in 1982 while Deborah Ramirez is accusing him of exposing himself without her consent at a Yale University gathering when the two were students there a few years later.

Kavanaugh has denied both accusations, unequivocally stating in a Fox News interview on Monday that they are false and he has never assaulted anyone.

Conservatives took to social media to denounce the CNN guest’s comments, saying there is a difference between the accusations emerging against Kavanaugh and those that Cosby faces.

“CNN guest compares convicted serial rapist Bill Cosby, who faced an actual trial and was found guilty, to Brett Kavanaugh who faces uncorroborated allegations from high school,” tweeted Jason Howerton, the director of engagement at Conservative Review TV network. “What is this?”

The Daily Caller’s Benny Johnson on Twitter called the exchange a “new low” for CNN.

Talk show host Ross Kaminsky said it was “sickening” to hear “that someone can’t honestly support Brett Kavanaugh while also applauding Cosby going to jail.”

CNN did not immediately respond to The Hill’s request for comment.

Cosby’s publicist on Tuesday drew a comparison between the two men as well, saying both are victims of “a sex war” in “Washington.”
