Warren congratulates former student and researcher on election to Congress

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) on Thursday congratulated her former student from Harvard Law School upon her successful election to Congress in California.

Warren tweeted her congratulations Thursday evening to Katie Porter, a Democratic candidate for the House in California’s 45th district whose election was called Thursday following more than a week of counting votes.

“I’m proud of all of our incredible incoming Democratic House members, but I’m ESPECIALLY proud of our newest: my former student & research partner @katieporteroc!” Warren wrote in a tweet.

“WOO-HOO! You’re going to be an AMAZING fighter for families in CA & across the country, Congresswoman-elect Porter,” the senator added.

Porter defeated GOP Rep. Mimi Walters (Calif.) on Thursday to become the latest Democrat to unseat a sitting GOP incumbent in the 2018 midterm cycle as the party saw dozens of House seats gained from Republicans in last week’s elections.

The close race in California’s southern coastal county ended Thursday night with Porter capturing the once-GOP stronghold that previously was home to former President Richard Nixon.

Porter is not the first of Warren’s former student’s to be elected to Congress. Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) revealed on MSNBC in 2013 that he was once a student in Warren’s contract law class at Harvard, and fellow Massachusetts lawmaker Rep. Joe Kennedy (D) is a former student of Warren’s as well.
