Trump Jr. blasts reported Roy Moore Senate bid: ‘It’s time to ride off into the sunset’

Donald Trump Jr. lambasted former Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore amid reports the former Alabama chief justice may again challenge Sen. Doug Jones (D-Ala.) in 2020.

“You’re literally the only candidate who could lose a GOP seat in pro-Trump, pro-USA ALABAMA. Running for office should never become a business model,” President Trump’s eldest son tweeted Tuesday. “If you actually care about #MAGA more than your own ego, it’s time to ride off into the sunset, Judge.”

{mosads}Trump Jr.’s tweet came the same day one of Moore’s potential rivals for the seat, Rep. Bradley Byrne (R-Ala.), told The Hill that sources close to Moore expect him to announce his candidacy in June. Republican officials in Washington are reportedly committed to preventing Moore from winning the nomination after he lost to Jones in 2017 amid allegations of sexual misconduct involving underage girls. Moore has denied all the allegations.

President Trump endorsed Moore’s primary opponent, former Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange, before endorsing Moore in the general election. After Jones’s victory, Trump Jr. sarcastically thanked former White House strategist Stephen Bannon, a major Moore backer, for his “good work.”

Trump Jr. previously urged West Virginia Republicans to vote against former coal executive Don Blankenship in the 2018 primary, writing “no more fumbles like Alabama.” Blankenship lost in the primary to West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey (R), who lost in the general election to West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin (D).
