Tim Scott says next Senate leader needs to work ‘hand in glove’ with Trump

Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) said Sunday that the next Republican Senate leader needs to be able to work “hand in glove” with former President Trump.

Fox News’s Maria Bartiromo asked Scott on “Sunday Morning Futures” who he would like to see as the next Republican leader in the Senate. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) announced last month he would be stepping down from his leadership position next November.

“I would like to see someone leading the Senate who is willing and able to work hand in glove with President Trump. We need a majority in the Senate that understands putting America first is working with President Trump,” Scott said.

Scott has been a major surrogate for the former president since he dropped out of the running for the Republican nomination last year. He has endorsed Trump as speculation has swirled over whether Scott will be selected as Trump’s running mate.

“Our priorities should start with closing the southern border. It should continue on having the next wave of tax cuts that gives Americans their money back, and then we should make sure that we have law and order in our streets. That’s not the person, John or John. It’s the concept that President Trump will lead our country to a brighter future,” Scott said.

“And we must have a new majority leader who wants to work hand in glove with Donald Trump,” he added.

The Senate GOP is divided on how strongly they should embrace Trump as some lawmakers throw their hats in the ring to be the next Republican leader. Sens. John Thune (R-S.D.) and John Cornyn (R-Texas) have already announced their intentions to run, while Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) said he has locked down enough votes to become the next Senate Republican whip in 2025.
