Parkland parent calls on McConnell take up gun legislation after California shooting

The parent of a student who died in the Parkland, Fla., shooting last year is calling on Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to take up gun legislation in the Senate, following the shooting at a California high school Thursday.

{mosads}Fred Guttenberg, whose daughter Jaime was killed in the shooting at Marjorie Douglas High School last year, took to Twitter after reports of the shooting at Santa Clarita, Calif. asking parents to push McConnell to turn his attention to gun legislation.

The shooting at Saugus High School on Thursday has left two dead and four others, including the shooter, injured as of Thursday afternoon.

The suspect is in custody and being treated in a local hospital for a gunshot wound to the head.

“Dear Parents, please go home today and hug your children and tell them you love them,” he posted. “When you do this, imagine that this is the last time you will ever see them alive again.  Then demand @senatemajldr opens the Senate so that we can give your children a chance to live.”

The House passed a universal background checks bill earlier this year, but McConnell has blocked debate on the legislation in the Senate, saying he will not take it up unless he knows President Trump will sign it into law.
