McConnell says secretary for the majority to retire from Senate

Senate Secretary for the Majority Laura Dove will retire from her post at the end of the month, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) announced Thursday.

Dove was elected secretary for the minority in 2013 and then secretary for the majority in 2015. McConnell lauded Dove, describing her as one of his “closest advisers.”

“Every Republican Senator has counted on Laura to listen to our goals and concerns and help translate them into action on the Senate floor,” McConnell said.

“She is a keen strategist who always thinks several steps ahead. She has not just been one of my own closest advisers, but a key resource to our entire majority and a central part of its many accomplishments.”

In the Senate, both the majority and minority parties elect a secretary. As secretary for the majority, Dove managed the Republican Cloakroom, facilitated communication between the two leaders, worked out the floor schedule, provided guidance to GOP senators and more.

“Senators and staff on both sides of the aisle will miss Laura a lot and I will be foremost among them,” McConnell added.

Dove began her career in the Senate as a page and then worked in the Republican Cloakroom as an assistant under Senate Republican Leader Bob Dole (Kan.).

Robert Duncan, the assistant Republican secretary, will succeed Dove as the next secretary for the majority.
