READ: Trump attorneys deny request for impeachment testimony
Attorneys for former President Trump on Thursday dismissed a request for him to testify under oath at his Senate impeachment trial next week.
Rep. Jamie Raskin (Md.), the Democrats’ lead impeachment manager, sent a letter to Trump earlier in the day making the formal request. Trump’s attorneys Bruce Castor and David Schoen in their response dismiss the request as a “public relations stunt.”
The Senate trial, which begins Monday, will consider the article of impeachment passed by the House that accuses Trump of inciting the Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol.
“Your letter only confirms what is known to everyone: you cannot prove your allegations against the 45th President of the United States, who is now a private citizen,” Trump’s attorneys wrote in the letter. “The use of our Constitution to bring a purported impeachment proceeding is much too serious to try to play these games.”
