Schumer trends after joining street performance of ‘New York, New York’

Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) began trending on Twitter on Monday after video of him singing along with street performers in Brooklyn was shared online.

In the video first posted on Saturday evening, Schumer can be seen singing the Frank Sinatra classic “New York, New York.”

According to New York public defender Shana Knizhnik, who filmed the performance, Schumer also sang a rendition of “Piano Man” by Billy Joel. Knizhnik tweeted that the apparently impromptu performance by the senator took place in Park Slope, where Schumer was born and still lives.

By Monday afternoon, the video posted by Knizhnik had receive more than 5,000 likes and nearly 1,000 retweets.

A Twitter user named Eugene tweeted that it was his band, named Alice Valentine, that Schumer had joined.

Notably, none of the people in the video appeared to be wearing masks. Last week, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) announced that he would adopt the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s new guidance on masks, allowing fully vaccinated people to go without masks in most outdoor and indoor settings. However, masks are still advised for all if there is a crowd of people.
