According to a poll conducted last month, Democrat Ralph Northam held a six point lead over Gillespie in the race for Virginia’s governor.
The Quinnipiac University poll showed Northam, the state’s lieutenant governor, was polling at 44 percent among Virginia voters, compared to Gillespie who had just 38 percent support.
Late last month, Gillespie backed a petition that opposes the removal of Virginia’s Confederate statues and monuments. He cast efforts to remove Confederate status from public land as an attempt to erase history.
Rice, who served under former President George W. Bush, is also expected to be at the National Book Festival on Saturday in Washington.
