Dem wins Albuquerque mayoral race after eight years of GOP control

New Mexico’s state auditor will become the first Democrat to serve as Albuquerque’s mayor in the past eight years.

Tim Keller won the mayoral race against Republican Albuquerque City Councilor Dan Lewis, according to The Associated Press.

Keller replaces Republican Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry, who did not run for reelection.

{mosads}Keller defeated Lewis by more than 20 points, 62 to 38 percent, according to unofficial results.

Hillary Clinton won New Mexico in the 2016 presidential election, 48 to 40 percent. She also held a lead in the county in which Albuquerque is located.

Keller said after his victory he plans to work to rebuild trust between the city’s police department and residents. He also said he would be the mayor for “all of Albuquerque.”

The win comes after Democrats earlier this month claimed big victories up and down the ballot and across the country. The Democratic candidates won the gubernatorial races in both Virginia and New Jersey, and Democrats took seats in state legislatures from coast to coast.
