Florida Dem party chair apologizes for ‘demeaning’ behavior toward women

Florida Democratic Party Chairman Stephen Bittel issued an apology for inappropriate behavior toward women on his staff this week after six Florida Democratic Party staffers and consultants accused him of the behavior, according to Politico.

“Every person, regardless of their gender, race, age or sexuality should be treated with respect and valued for their hard work and contributions to our community and if any of my comments or actions did not reflect that belief I am deeply sorry,” Bittel said in a statement.

{mosads}“I have much to learn, but my goal is and has always been to make sure every member of our party has a safe environment in which to succeed. It seems I’ve not been successful in that goal, and I will do better,” he said. 

Bittel’s accusers said he created an uncomfortable feeling in the workplace, and that he often made suggestive remarks about women, and would attempt to lure women onto his private jet and hotel rooms. 

However, the accusers said Bittel did not touch them inappropriately or threaten them. 

The report comes as women across the country have come forward to accuse prominent men of sexual assault and harassment. 

Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) became the latest influential man to be accused on Thursday after a radio show host said Franken kissed and groped her without her consent during a USO tour in 2006. She released a photo of Franken’s hands on her breasts while she was apparently asleep.

Franken released a statement apologizing for his actions, and called for an ethics investigation of himself. 

“I understand why we need to listen to and believe women’s experiences,” he said. “I am asking that an ethics investigation be undertaken, and I will gladly cooperate.”

Numerous women have also come forward to accuse Alabama Senate Republican candidate Roy Moore of sexual misconduct with minors. 

Despite the growing list of accusers, Moore has refused to relinquish his campaign and has dismissed the allegations as politically motivated.
