Colorado state lawmakers advance measure to rename highway after Obama

Colorado state lawmakers passed a resolution out of committee Thursday to rename a portion of an interstate to the “Barack Obama Highway,” The Denver Post reported.

Democratic state Rep. Dan Pabon introduced the resolution to honor the former president. It passed out of the state House Transportation and Energy Committee by a 12-1 vote.

“It’s a historic stretch of highway near Mile High Stadium where he accepted the Democratic nomination and went on to become president,” Pabon said, according to the Post.

The measure will be voted on by the Democratic-held state House but would have to pass through the GOP-controlled Senate.

Only GOP Rep. Kimmi Lewis voted against the resolution in committee.

“Nothing personal. As a person on the land and a rancher, he did everything there was to hurt me,” Lewis told the Post. “Therefore, I just didn’t think it was a good idea.”

“I sit here and I listen to them bash Donald Trump. He’s our new president, so, you know, I just wasn’t in favor,” she added.

The city of Riviera Beach, Fla., renamed its Old Dixie Highway to the President Barack Obama Highway in 2015.

And a Utah state Republican attempted earlier this year to rename a highway after President Trump, but withdrew the proposal because it was “still controversial.”
