LA airport allowing passengers to carry marijuana

Los Angeles International Airport is allowing passengers to carry marijuana on airport property, according to a statement recently published on the LAX website.

“The Los Angeles Airport Police Department will allow passengers to travel through LAX with up to 28.5 grams of marijuana and 8 grams of concentrated marijuana,” the airport wrote in its website last month, according to CNN. “However, passengers should be aware that marijuana laws vary state by state and they are encouraged to check the laws of the states in which they plan to travel.”

{mosads}California passed the Adult Use of Marijuana Act in 2016, making it legal as of Jan. 1, 2018, “for individuals 21 years of age or older to possess up to 28.5 grams of marijuana and 8 grams of concentrated marijuana for personal consumption.”

“Based on our policy, we’re not going to arrest you or confiscate marijuana,” Los Angeles Airport Police spokesperson Alicia Hernandez said in a phone interview with McClatchy last week.

Possession of the substance is still illegal in many U.S. states, and its illegal at the federal level as well.

If a Transportation Security Administration agent discovers marijuana on a traveler or in their luggage, they are supposed to refer the matter to local law enforcement, TSA spokeswoman Lorie Dankers told McClatchy.

“Law enforcement officials will determine whether to initiate a criminal investigation or what steps – if any – will be taken,” Dankers said.

“We’re not going to be taking any action against you for having that marijuana,” Hernandez said.
