Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper (D) on Monday said that he is “past 50-50” when it comes to the chances of him running for president in 2020.
“I’d say we’re past 50-50,” Hickenlooper said on CNN’s “New Day.”
“I think we’re probably 63, 64 percent. 6.4, 6.5 [out of 10 chance],” he said while laughing.
{mosads}”You’re at a 7 [out of 10 chance]?,” CNN’s Alisyn Camerota pressed.
“Maybe not quite, but getting there,” the Colorado governor said.
“It’s an interesting time with so many candidates,” he said. “I look at things through a different filter than most of the other candidates out there.”
The Associated Press reported last week that Hickenlooper is staffing up in preparation for a possible 2020 White House bid, hiring Democratic strategist Anna Greenberg to be his pollster and FK & Co. to be his national fundraiser.
The 2020 Democratic primary could be a crowded field with more than a dozen contenders apparently ready to throw their hat in the ring.
One way or another, Hickenlooper said he thought the way Colorado has been governed should be a lesson to whoever ends up being the Democratic nominee in 2020.
“People say Colorado’s a flyover state, you know, Denver was a cow town. But we’ve changed dramatically over the last couple decades,” he said.
“I think a lot of those changes, and sort of how we did it, how we worked together, it’s a message that people should hear.”
