Walker pens Facebook post defending lame-duck legislation undermining incoming Dem governor

Outgoing Republican Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker took to Facebook on Tuesday to defend several controversial measures the GOP-held legislature passed last week that curb the power of the incoming Democratic governor.

Former Wisconsin Gov. Scott McCallum (R) is among those who has called on Walker to reject some of the measures. Gov.-elect Tony Evers (D) says the bills are meant to circumvent “the will of the people.”

In Walker’s Facebook post, he says he has not decided if he will sign the bills.

{mosads}“Let’s set the record straight — the new governor will still have some of the strongest powers of any governor in the nation if these bills become law,” Walker wrote.

Walker says in his post that Evers would maintain veto power and have “some of the broadest line-item veto authority of any governor in the nation.”

He walks through the “criteria” he will use when deciding whether or not to sign the legislation brought before him.

Among the proposals Walker is considering are limits on the power of the governor and attorney general, prohibiting, for example, the officials from leaving lawsuits that the state had previously entered without the legislature’s approval.

Walker did not discuss specifics of the pending legislation in his Facebook post.

Evers said after speaking to Walker last week he was “not particularly encouraged” by their discussion.
