Wisconsin governor’s proposal would give ID’s to undocumented immigrants


Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers (D) is proposing providing undocumented immigrants in the state with identification cards.

Undocumented immigrants would also have the option to qualify for driver’s permits as part of the budget proposal rolled out by Evers Thursday, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Evers is set to address lawmakers at the statehouse in Madison this evening but released excerpts of his speech to the news outlet before then.

{mosads}”We’re announcing tonight that undocumented folks will be eligible to receive driver’s licenses and ID cards,” Evers is set to introduce in his speech, according to excerpts. “This makes our roads and our communities safer, and helps strengthen our economy and Wisconsin families.”

Evers campaigned on the idea of granting undocumented immigrants the chance to qualify for driving permits by taking a test and paying a fee.

The Journal Sentinel reports state lawmakers are likely to rewrite that portion of the budget proposal or throw the whole thing out in its entirety.

The GOP-led legislature already passed bills under former Gov. Scott Walker (R) that significantly limited Evers powers upon taking office.

Evers will now work with state lawmakers to finalize and approve a budget.
