Multiple victims reported, suspect dead in shooting on Nevada campus: Authorities

Three people were killed and another injured in a mass shooting at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas campus Wednesday. Police also shot and killed the gunman, according to authorities.

The injured person was described as in stable condition.

The shooting occurred at about noon local time, starting in an academic building and moving into the Student Union, police said. It sparked a campus-wide evacuation and a lockdown at neighboring schools which lasted over three hours.

“Today is a tragic day for UNLV. We’re all still in shock as we process the unfathomable event,” university President Keith Whitfield said in a statement. “Members of our community lost their lives and others were injured. My heart aches for our UNLV family.”

Local police shut down the area surrounding the university, including parts of Interstate 15 adjacent to the Las Vegas strip.

“Tragic and heartbreaking news coming out of @unlv. Praying for everyone on campus as law enforcement responds to the situation,” Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman wrote on X

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said at Wednesday’s press briefing that she had been briefed on the situation and that the White House was monitoring reports. She added, “this is an epidemic that the president has taken very seriously.”

Earlier Wednesday, Senate Republicans blocked Senate Democrats’ efforts to pass an assault weapons ban and universal background checks legislation — a move that came after the United States surpassed the record over the weekend for most mass shootings in one year.

Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo (R) said he was in communication with local law enforcement and asked people on campus to follow the instructions of police as they evacuate the campus.

Nevada’s Democratic Sens. Jacky Rosen and Catherine Cortez Masto each said on X that they were monitoring the situation.

The Hill has reached out to the Las Vegas Police Department for further comment.
