1 dead, 4 injured in Los Angeles County shooting

One person was killed and another four were injured in an early morning New Year’s Day shooting near a Los Angeles County shopping mall, police said.

The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department said the shooting took place about 30 minutes after midnight Monday in the city of Hawthorne. Officers responding to reports of gunshots found one male victim suffering from gunshots at the scene and transported him to a local hospital.

Officers later learned that there were four additional victims at the scene who were suffering from gunshot wounds. These additional victims were transported to a local hospital, where a female victim was pronounced dead, the sheriff’s office said. Three of the other victims were in stable condition, while one is in critical condition.

The shooting occurred on the 14100 block of Crenshaw Boulevard in Hawthorne near a shopping mall. The sheriff’s office said there is no suspect in custody and there is no available information about a potential suspect.

The sheriff’s department said it will continue to investigate the shooting.
