California pushing to remove sales tax on diapers and tampons

California Gov. Gavin Newsom is pushing to remove sales tax on diapers and tampons as of part his budget for the upcoming fiscal year released Tuesday.

The plan calls for an additional $130 million to help parents pay for child care and the doubling of a proposed tax credit from $500 to $1,000 for families with children under the age of 6, according to The Sacramento Bee.

California would join a handful of other states and major cities that have eliminated the tax on diapers and feminine hygiene products.

{mosads}The news outlet noted that lawmakers in the state have been trying unsuccessfully to do away with the taxes for some time.

Now, Newsom is trying to use California’s expected budget surplus next year to push through the measure.

State legislative committees have previously estimated that California would lose roughly $35 million from diapers and another $20 million from feminine hygiene products if it ended the taxes, though both corporate and income taxes came in higher than projected last month. 

Newsom at a press conference Tuesday was on stage with several female state lawmakers who have pushed for the elimination of the taxes.
