1 dead, 5 injured in New York subway shooting, police say

One man was killed and five more people were injured in a shooting at a Bronx subway station Monday afternoon, the New York Police Department (NYPD) said.

Police said that two groups of teenagers began a fight on a 4 train at about 4:30 p.m., which devolved into a shooting at a platform once the train stopped at the Mt. Eden Avenue subway station in the Bronx.

Six people were shot, four men and two women between the ages of 14 and 71 years old. A 34-year-old man died from his injuries, police said.

Some of the victims were in the groups of teenagers, while others were bystanders, police said. The extent of the injuries was not disclosed.

“New York’s heart breaks when people are headed home, and kids who are coming home from school to do their homework are subjected to random acts of violence like what occurred here late this afternoon,” MTA Commissioner Janno Lieber said at a press conference. “New York’s heart breaks when guns are on the streets, even though the mayor and the governor are doing everything possible to get guns off the streets.”

“New York’s heart breaks when this happens — senseless acts of violence of this kind,” he continued. “I spoke to the governor earlier, and she wanted me to express her confidence that the NYPD, who is the best in the business, is going to catch this guy, whoever it is. But in the meantime, our hearts go out to the victims.”

A suspect has not been identified. Police said video footage from the subway station is under review to determine the exact number of shooters, their accomplices and their possible identities.

There have been 43 mass shootings so far in 2024, according to the nonprofit Gun Violence Archive.
