Virginia Beach official: Suspected gunman’s resignation email was ‘unremarkable’
The resignation email of the suspected gunman who killed 12 people in a Virginia Beach, Va., municipal building was “unremarkable,” a city official told The Associated Press Monday.
“The document itself is part of the investigative file,” the city’s communications director, Julie Hill, said in an email to the news service. “If detectives are able to clear it for release, we will provide it.”
The suspect gunman, identified as DeWayne Craddock, had been a longtime public utilities engineer with the city and had emailed his superiors on Friday to give them his two weeks’ notice.
{mosads}About 4 p.m. on Friday, he allegedly entered the building and “began to indiscriminately fire upon all the victims” using a .45-caliber handgun with extended magazines, authorities said.
Craddock was killed in what officials characterized as a “long-term gun battle” with four police officers.
He was an employee “in good standing” and showed “satisfactory” job performance, City Manager Dave Hansen said over the weekend.
The victims of the shooting were LaQuita Brown, Tara Gallagher, Mary Gayle, Alexander Gusev, Katherine Nixon, Richard Nettleton, Christopher Rapp, Ryan Cox, Joshua Hardy, Michelle “Missy” Langer, Robert “Bobby” Williams and Herbert “Bert” Snelling.
All were city employees except for Snelling, a contractor who was at the municipal building for a license renewal at the time of the shooting.
