Super Bowl parade shooting apparently stemmed from dispute between several people: Police
The mass shooting in Kansas City, Mo., that took place after the Super Bowl victory parade Wednesday apparently stemmed from a dispute between several people, police said Thursday.
The shooting occurred near Union Station just after the Kansas City Chiefs’ victory parade Wednesday and resulted in the death of at least one person. Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves said Thursday at a press briefing that 22 people were injured, with ages ranging between 8 and 47 years old. She noted that at least half of the injured victims were under 16.
Graves said they have three people in custody in connection to the shooting, including two juveniles. Police said they have recovered firearms from the shooting but have not yet charged those in custody as the investigation continues.
“First and foremost, I want to stress that preliminary investigative findings have shown there was no nexus to terrorism or homegrown violent extremism. This appear to be a dispute between several people that ended in gunfire,” she said.
Graves noted that the police department has up to 24 hours to charge those in custody. She also said that the relationship between the suspects remains under investigation.
“We are working to determine the involvement of others. And it should be noted we have recovered several firearms. This incident is still a very active investigation,” Graves said at the briefing, urging members of the public to send in tips and footage of the shooting if they were in close vicinity to it.
Children’s Mercy Hospital said it had received 12 patients from the parade, including 11 between the ages 6 and 15. Nine of the children had been shot, the hospital noted. The hospital said all of the victims it saw are expected to recover, adding that there are three patients remaining at the hospital.
The FBI is also asking for the public’s help in submitting tips and video footage taken of the shooting.
The Associated Press reported that St. Luke’s Hospital spokesperson Emily Hohenberg said there is one gunshot victim at the hospital that remains in critical condition, while four others who were treated for injuries were released.
