2 juveniles charged in Super Bowl parade mass shooting

Two juveniles have been charged in the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl parade mass shooting that killed one and injured 22 people. 

The Jackson County Family Court in Missouri said the juveniles are being detained in the county’s Juvenile Detention Center on resisting arrest and “gun-related” penalties. The release also said that “additional” charges could occur as the probe continues, according to The Associated Press. 

The police initially brought in three individuals but released one after determining the person was not involved in the shooting. Law enforcement is still looking for other possible suspects and is asking the public to call a new hotline with any leads. 

The Wednesday shooting took the life of a mother of two kids while 22 people suffered injuries. Local radio station KKFI confirmed one of its DJs, Lisa Lopez-Galvan, was the mother who was killed. The ages of the victims were between 8 and 47, according to Kansas City Missouri Police Department Chief Stacey Graves’s remarks Thursday. 

The shooting escalated at the rally following the conclusion of the Kansas City Chiefs parade outside Union Station. More than 800 law enforcement members were present in the area when the shooting occurred. Around 1 million people attended the parade, according to police estimates.  

Initially, when the shots rang, some people thought they were fireworks, while others jumped over barriers and tried to get home. 

“The law enforcement response was exemplary,” Graves said. “Those in attendance also responded.”

There have been 50 mass shootings so far in 2024, according to the nonprofit Gun Violence Archive. 

Following the shooting, the Chiefs released a statement saying the organization was “saddened” by the incident.
